Zhang Lihua, the chairman of Beijing Limin Henghua Agricultural Science and Technology Co., Ltd., recently honored as "Beijing's Rural Practical Personnel with Outstanding Contributions," has successfully empowered women in Fangshan through handicrafts over the past three years. At 37 years old, Zhang graduated from the Beijing University of International Business and Economics and, at the end of 2005, invested 200,000 yuan to establish Limin Henghua Agricultural Technology Co., Ltd. The company initially focused on selling specialty agricultural products, achieving sales of over 500,000 yuan in its first year and creating employment opportunities for more than 20 rural women. In early 2007, after experiencing initial business success, Zhang was approached by local women who asked what she was doing. She believed that hand-knitting was an ideal project for women, so with strong support from the Fangshan Women’s Federation, she founded the Qiaogu Handicrafts Chamber of Commerce. The chamber now includes 10 member companies and 56 individual members, with the registered trademark “Qiao Gu Liang Sao.” It employs senior designers, establishes a research and development room, and creates a variety of handicrafts inspired by Fangshan’s history, culture, and geography—such as Jingxiu crafts, handbags, ornaments, and straw crafts. The organization also provides free training for women interested in knitting and has built 12 handicraft training bases in Xiqiao Community and Yanshan Xingcheng, investing over 1 million RMB to promote skill development. Through these efforts, many rural women have transitioned from being ordinary farmers to becoming skilled knitters, earning income without leaving home. In 2008, Zhang invested over 2 million RMB to open a new “Qianggu Handicrafts Store” in Anzhuang Village, offering more than 600 types of handwoven products across eight series. Currently, nearly 600 women are involved in hand-weaving, with an average annual income of 8,000 RMB per person. After three years of hard work, the handicrafts produced by “Qiao Niang” have entered major wholesale markets such as Hongqiao and Xiushui. Products like love ear pillows, woven bags, wire mesh flowers, handmade paper-cuttings, and cross-stitch have been branded under “Qiao Gu Liang Sao” and have even reached international markets in Russia, the United Arab Emirates, and beyond. This has opened new economic opportunities for women in Fangshan, helping them build better lives through their craftsmanship.
