Zhang Lihua, the chairman of Beijing Limin Henghua Agricultural Science and Technology Co., Ltd., recently honored as "Beijing's Rural Practical Personnel with Outstanding Contributions," has successfully empowered women in Fangshan by creating a thriving handicraft industry over the past three years. At 37, Zhang graduated from the Beijing University of International Business and Economics and, at the end of 2005, invested 200,000 yuan to establish Limin Henghua Agricultural Technology Co., Ltd. The company initially focused on selling specialty agricultural products, achieving sales exceeding 500,000 yuan in its first year and providing employment opportunities for more than 20 rural women.
In early 2007, after gaining initial success, Zhang was approached by local women who wanted to join her efforts. She believed that hand-knitting was an ideal project for women, so with strong support from the Fangshan Women’s Federation, she founded the Qiaogu Handicrafts Chamber of Commerce. The chamber included 10 member companies and 56 individual members, with the registered trademark “Qiao Gu Liang Sao.†A team of senior artisans was hired, and a research and development room was established to design a range of handicrafts inspired by Fangshan’s history, culture, and geography, including Jingxiu handicrafts, handbags, ornaments, and straw crafts. Additionally, Zhang set up skill training bases and offered free knitting classes to women interested in learning.
To further expand access to these opportunities, Zhang invested over 1 million yuan to establish 12 handicraft production training centers in Xiqiao Community and Yanshan Xingcheng. Through these programs, many rural women transitioned from being ordinary farmers to skilled knitters, earning income from home during their free time. In 2008, Zhang invested over 2 million yuan to open a new “Qianggu Handicrafts Store†in Anzhuang Village, Xiqiao Sub-district, offering over 600 types of handwoven products across eight series. Currently, nearly 600 women are engaged in hand-weaving, with an average annual income of 8,000 yuan per person.
After three years of dedicated effort, the handicrafts produced by “Qiao Niang†have entered major wholesale markets like Hongqiao and Xiushui. Products such as lovers’ ear pillows, woven bags, wire mesh flowers, handmade paper-cuts, and cross-stitch have gained international recognition, with the “Qiao Gu Liang Sao†brand now sold in countries like Russia and the United Arab Emirates. This has opened new pathways for women in Fangshan to improve their livelihoods through traditional craftsmanship.
