kid’s clothes week: october 2015

June 07, 2025

Did you hear that Kid’s Clothes Week is right around the corner again? Meg is here to give us the scoop on what’s in store for the upcoming season. Over to you, Meg! If you’re into sewing clothes for kids, you’ve probably already heard about Kid’s Clothes Week. KCW is a sewing challenge where you commit to making clothes for your children for an hour a day over the span of seven days. It happens four times a year—once per season—and it’s such a fun way to get creative and sew along! This season, we’ve got an exciting theme lined up: DISGUISE. You’re free to sew whatever you like, but narrowing down your project list can be a blast, especially when you’re trying to “sew all the things!” Our awesome contributors have shared tons of ideas on how to play around with the disguise concept—from costumes your kids can wear every day to clever details that hide in plain sight, like pockets shaped like kittens or sharks. Take a look at these inspiring examples: [Image description: A collection of kid's outfits featuring various disguises, including superhero costumes, animal-inspired hats, and playful accessories.] Oliver + S patterns have always been fantastic for creating disguises. These patterns are straightforward enough to modify and sturdy enough to endure countless wears. Compare that to those flimsy, expensive costumes you can buy—they just don’t hold up well over time. Here are some of my favorite costume versions of Oliver + S patterns (pictured below). Some of these were even sewn during previous KCWs! [Image description: A gallery of modified Oliver + S garments transformed into disguises, showcasing everything from skeleton fairies to Madeline-inspired headbands.] When it comes to disguises, the Cozy Winter Hood from the book *Little Things to Sew* is hard to beat. Who wouldn’t want a hat with ears? Think bat ears, bear ears, Yoda ears, or even elephant ears! The cozy winter hood pattern works for so many different disguises. Switch out the fabric for something light and flowy, lengthen the ears, and voila—a sweet springtime bunny bonnet for those in the southern hemisphere. Or grab some white sherpa and black felt for a cozy panda hat that’s perfect for winter. Whether your child dreams up a superhero outfit or an animal-inspired disguise, you can create it yourself! And who knows—you might just finish in time for Halloween. [Image description: A cheerful graphic promoting Kid’s Clothes Week with a countdown timer.] Spread the word by adding our button to your blog or social media pages. Encourage everyone you know to join in on the KCW fun this year! Sign up now and let the sewing adventure begin! [Image description: A final motivational image with the tagline: "Sign up for Kid’s Clothes Week today!"] P.S. If you're inspired to try something new, why not experiment with some of these disguise ideas? The possibilities are endless!
