India's Cotton Farmers Repaying Cash Costs Produce Psychological Reluctance to Sell
From October 1st to December 5th, India's total cotton arrivals reached 7 million bales (each bale weighing 170 kg), matching the same period last year when arrivals also hit 7.2 million bales. However, regional variations are becoming more evident as the season progresses.
In Gujarat, the country’s largest cotton market, arrivals fell by 15% year-on-year to 2.3 million bales. Similarly, in Maharashtra, cotton inflows remained sluggish, while only modest increases were reported in Madhya Pradesh and Andhra Pradesh.
Despite a slight rise in overall production—reaching 32.5 million bales this year compared to 29.5 million bales last year—the actual arrival of cotton has been lower than expected. This could be due to delayed harvesting or logistical challenges.
Many farmers have managed to cover their cash costs, thanks to a near-doubling of cotton prices this season. As a result, they are not rushing to sell their stocks, according to a local dealer. The price surge is largely driven by export demand, with traders trying to fulfill contracts before the December 15 deadline.
The Indian government has set an export quota of 5.5 million bales for this season, with December 15 as the final date for exporting. Industry insiders, however, believe that only 300,000 to 3.5 million bales will actually be exported. This is due to a sharp increase in domestic prices, which has made it harder for traders to purchase cotton at competitive rates.
According to an official from the Indian Cotton Company, the price of Sankar cotton, one of the six major types, has hit a record high of 45,500 rupees per candi (1 candi = 356 kg). Last year, the price was as low as 32,200 rupees per candi, highlighting the dramatic shift in market conditions this season.
With the deadline approaching and rising prices, the cotton market remains tight, and both farmers and traders are closely watching how the situation unfolds in the coming weeks.
