Humen is situated on the eastern bank of the Pearl River Estuary, in the southern part of Dongguan City. It lies at the intersection of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao economic corridor, with convenient access to sea, land, and air transportation. Historically, Humen gained global recognition for Lin Zexu's famous "Humen Opium Destruction," a pivotal moment in Chinese history. Today, it is known worldwide as "Humen Clothing," symbolizing its deep-rooted textile industry.
Humen has established itself as a renowned city both domestically and internationally, earning titles such as "China's Garment City" and "China's Women's Famous Town." The local clothing industry is characterized by large-scale production, high output, superior quality, trendy designs, fast delivery, and a strong market presence. Annually, the town accounts for about 30% of Guangdong Province's apparel sales and approximately 20% of the national total.
As a leading force in the garment industry, Humen has developed a comprehensive industrial cluster that supports the entire textile and apparel supply chain. By the end of 2009, there were 1,250 garment factories producing 250 million pieces annually, with sales reaching 15 billion yuan and exports exceeding 400 million U.S. dollars. Approximately 250,000 of the town’s 650,000 residents are engaged in the garment manufacturing sector.
The town is home to 23 large-scale professional clothing wholesale markets, housing over 10,000 shops across more than 300,000 square meters of operating space. These markets are primarily concentrated within the Fumin Fashion City, forming a commercial hub of one square kilometer in the central area. In addition, Humen clothing enterprises operate more than 15,000 stores and chain outlets across China and in over 40 countries and regions worldwide.
Humen also boasts 147 supporting industries, including weaving, dyeing, zippers, embroidery, and buttons, along with 10 fabric and accessory wholesale markets. This creates a 1 km² sales area for materials and accessories, complemented by over 40 promotional agencies, 50 logistics and distribution companies, and more than 6,000 daily bus trips. The city has built a complete network encompassing design, production, and sales.
From a stylistic perspective, Humen clothing represents the "Southern School Costume," drawing inspiration from nature, the sky, and the sea. The fabrics are lightweight and breathable, with vibrant colors reflecting the bright skies and green landscapes of the south. Designs often follow trends from Hong Kong, South Korea, Japan, and Europe, while also emphasizing the unique Lingnan style and the charm of the Southern Yue River.
In terms of product structure, Humen focuses mainly on women’s fashion and casual wear. About 60% of the town’s garments are casual, with women's fashion making up 60% of the market. Common products include women’s fashion wear, T-shirts, sweaters, and jackets.
After over 20 years of development, Humen’s clothing industry has followed a path from "no brand - OEM - brand - well-known brand." Over 5,000 trademarks have been registered globally. Since the first International Fashion Fair in 1996, seven brands were launched, and numerous fairs helped cultivate more than 80 regional brands with significant influence.
Humen's brand strategy has achieved notable success, forming a "pyramid-shaped" brand creation structure. A tiered brand system — "regional brand - Guangdong famous brand - national famous brand" — has positioned Humen as a center for regional brands. Currently, over 30 apparel brands have earned provincial famous brand status, including one National Famous Brand, three Guangdong Famous Brands, and several others.
