Blue spinel

The blue spinel is blue, uniform in color, with a gray tone and not bright, without pleochroism. The internal common octahedral small spinel inclusions, the characteristic growth lines, ribbons and silky rutile inclusions of sapphire are not seen.

Cordierite

Cordierite has an attractive indigo blue and is often mistaken for sapphire, so people sometimes call it aquamarine. The chemical formula of cordierite is Mg2Al4Si5O18, which is colorless and is indigo blue and blue due to the trace amount of iron.

The main differences between cordierite and sapphire are:

(1) Cordierite indigo-light blue-colorless (light yellow) is trichromatic, while natural sapphire is blue-green dichroic, and is not colorless when viewed from any direction;

Blue cone mine

The blue cone mine is purple indigo, the chemical formula is BaTiSi3O8, and the gem-quality blue cone is mainly produced in California.

The main differences between the naked eye and sapphire are:

(1) The blue cone mine is a strong glass luster to a semi-golden luster, with high dispersion and visible fire color inside the honed gemstone;

(2) indigo-light blue (colorless) dichroism;

(3) The hardness is low, ranging from 6.0 to 6.5;

(4) The birefringence is large, and the bottom edge double shadow phenomenon is obvious;

(5) The particle size is generally small, and most are less than 1 carat.

Curtain stone

Gem-grade zoisite, also known as tanzanite, was first discovered in Tanzania. The chemical formula of the zoisite is Ca2Al3Si3O12(OH), and the untreated zoisite is pale purple, yellowish green and blue. After heat treatment, it is purple indigo, but the color is bright and uniform, without growth lines and ribbons. Purple-green-blue chromaticity is obvious and the hardness is low.
